“Featured on countless albums scattered across four decades-Michael Landau is undoubtedly one of the most recorded guitarists of all time. An ace of sessions in Los Angeles and appreciated by other musicians, Landau’s exciting, dynamic, and endlessly creative playing has enabled him to remain on the crest of the wave, spanning eras and genres, and to firmly establish his musical legacy as an icon of the electric guitar.
Mike’s guitar has made important contributions to the records of Pink Floyd, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, B.B. King, Rod Stewart, Mile Davis, Boz Scaggs, Tim McGraw, Bonnie Raitt, and many others. Throughout his career, Michael’s constant companion, work tool, canvas and muse has been a 1959 Stratocaster® nicknamed “Coma” Michael discovered Coma in a guitar store in Los Angeles when he was 16.
The repainted body and replaced pickups ideally allowed him to customize the instrument throughout his career to meet his evolving style. The distinctive Coma Red finish and indelible marker “Coma” graphics make it unmistakable, and the guitar has had many different incarnations over the years, accommodating a wide variety of pickups, electronics, hardware configurations and bridges.
The version of Coma recreated for the Fender® Stories collection represents the guitar as it is now. Electronics include specially crafted ML Ultra Noiseless Strat® pickups at the neck and middle position, and a custom Wide Range humbucking pickup at the bridge.
Hardware includes a vintage-style, 6-bolt, cold-rolled steel block Stratocaster tremolo, neck made to ML specifications, Fender ClassicGear™ tuners, and the unmistakable body with a red shaded, satin-lacquered finish, complete with Floyd Rose® bridge cutout. The Coma Michael Landau Stratocaster proudly demonstrates all its rich history, faithfully representing a vital artist in constant change. Included with the custom embroidered Coma hard case is a set of “Coma” stickers, a specially made shoulder strap, and a Coma booklet written by Michael himself.”
