Until 1957, Gibson kept it to the Les Paul Standard like Henry Ford did to the Model T: “Any color will do, as long as it’s gold.” That made it easy not only for Gibson, but also for the customers. There was no need for much thought on either side. People ordered and eventually got one – “goldtop.” This changed only in 1958 with the switch to sunburst finishes, in order to counter the much larger color range of other manufacturers with something comparable. The Goldtop is a real classic at Gibson and stands for the charm of the 1950s like no other color today.
