At the dawn of the 1970s, as popular music tended toward the fatter sounds of humbucking pickups in overdrive amps, Fender hired legendary humbucking pickup designer Seth Lover to create a typically Fender pickup on a dual coil pickup with higher output. The resulting Wide Range pickup used large coils and CuNiFe threaded rod magnets to achieve a unique, bright sound. The Telecaster Custom went out of production in 1979 and with it disappeared original CuNiFe magnet pickups. The original American Telecaster Custom 70s features the first authentic CuNiFe magnet Wide Range neck pickup in over 40 years, accompanied by a 1970s calibrated single-coil bridge pickup designed by Tim-Shaw. Controls include independent volume and tone for each pickup and a superior 3-way toggle switch. Other touches include original period body spokes, vintage-style hardware-including F-logo tuners and truss rod adjustment-and a lacquer finish that allows the wood to breathe naturally with a resonant sound. A vintage-style hard case is included.
