The Boss OC-3 can use up to three different modes of operation as an octaver. The new Polyphonic Octave Mode, the Drive Mode in which distortion is added to the octave effect, and the OC-2 compatible mode that offers the same effect available in the OC-2. All modes, however, can rely on special accuracy and stability of operation (essential for this type of effect) due to the use of the most advanced DSP technology. When the bass input is used, the OC-3 self-programs itself in the pitch range so that it can provide the best performance with bass.
